Alan,

If you don't already know about it, the book

"Advances in Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining"
Fayyad, Piatetsky-Shapiro, Uthurusamy - Editors
AAAI Press/MIT Press

contains a decent cross section of some of the different catagories of
algorithms. Section titles include:

Foundations, Classification & Clustering, Trend & Deviation Analysis,
Dependency Derivation

there are also sections on applications.

Though there is not a rigorous comparison, as a reader you should be
able
to see where the different types algorithms would best apply.

I hope that helps,

Stu
