DM: Introduction

From: Mark Last
Date: Tue, 29 Jul 1997 11:23:59 -0400 (EDT)
Hi,

My name is Mark Last.
I am a PHD student in Industrial Engineering at Tel-Aviv University,
Israel.
The subject of my research is: Information theoretic connectionist
approach
to data mining. The method combines a neural network structure with
some
basic concepts of the Information Theory and it is applicable to
attributes
of qualitative and quantitative nature. It can be used for extracting
informative rules from a database, predicting values of unknown
attributes
and discovering unreliable data. The algorithm has been successfully
tested
on a number of real-world databases.

The issues to be studied in my doctorate include:
Optimizing the network structure (including the data pre-processing
stage).
Measuring statistical significance of extracted rules and predictions.
Incorporating degrees of data reliability in a regular database.

We are interested in cooperation with scientific institutions and
other
organizations on real-world applications of our method.

Regards,

Mark
