DM: Use of KD/DM on Environmental Data

From: James J. Pomykalski, Ph.D.
Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 16:58:01 -0400 (EDT)
Let me start this message with an introduction and then I
have a question pertaining to a potential application of
KD/DM.

My name is James Pomykalski and I am a faculty member in
the Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) and Computer
Science Programs at James Madison University.

The ISAT program is a diverse program aimed at teaching
students a broad view of science and technology. We have
faculty that have expertise in information technology
(myself included), environmental systems, energy systems,
biotechnology, instrumentation and measurement,
manufacturing systems, health care, and science policy.

After a brief conversation with some of my colleagues in the
environment group I had a idea of using KD/DM to analyze
certain types of temporal environmental data, namely
tracking the flow of certain types of chemicals downstream
in order to measure their effect on the Chesapeake Bay.

Most of the work done on this type of data is to use static
GIS models, but very little work is performed on the
temporal aspect of these flows.

My question therefore is, does anyone have experience
applying KD/Dm techniques to temporal environmental data?

If so, please write to me directly (pomykajj@jmu.edu) and I
will be happy to summarize the findings and post it back to
this list.

I would appreciate any information, pointers, papers, etc.
that you can provide.

Thanks.

JJP
